After pounding every opponent in his path to win boxing gold at the Beijing Olympics, 22 year old James Degale has just stormed onto the British Boxing scene, announcing the start of his professional career in late 2008. PROFILE: MONTY PANESAR

 

Born to Indian Punjabi parents, he is the first Sikh to represent a nation other than India in Test cricket. Panesar sports a trademark black patka (a smaller version of the full Sikh turban) while playing and in cricket training. He is a crowd favourite in England, and many fans have worn patkas and fake beards while watching Panesar play.

I’ve always loved the medium of film, ever since I was a child. It was a form of escapism I guess, something exotic compared to the rather grim south London neighbourhood I grew up in. I was inspired by a wide range of filmmakers, from the likes of Alfred Hitchcock and Billy Wilder to Steven Spielberg and Ivan Reitman. I never really considered filmmaking as a viable career option until I went to college and studied film at A Level. After the first few lessons, I knew that film was going to be the career that I pursued; I hate to sound like a cliché but I’d found my calling.

PERSEVERANCE

 

University… life long memories and friends that will last till the end of time (well hopefully anyway). You work towards this day full of hope, with the promise that upon graduation the land of opportunity would be open to you with jobs galore. And the idea that you will be everything you ever wanted to be. But for a large minority of us it isn’t and that is the sad fact of life and education.
