A life on the ocean wave…
Cutting through waves on a massive sailing ship, accompanied by schools of dolphins… Climbing the 33 metre mast to reach the crow’s nest… Getting up at 4am to take ‘anchor watch’ and seeing the sunrise over the Atlantic… as volunteering goes, this is exciting stuff!
The Jubilee Sailing Trust owns two tall ships, designed and built to allow a crew of mixed physical abilities to sail together on equal terms. The ships’ facilities enable wheelchair-users, blind and hearing-impaired people to perform their duties independently alongside their able-bodied shipmates.
Sixteen- to 25-year-olds can take part in the Trust’s Youth Leadership @ Sea Scheme. You’ll be paired with another young person – one of you able-bodied, the other disabled – and together you will work as active members of the crew. You’ll also qualify for a bursary of up to £300 towards the cost of your voyage.
Choose a short trip around the British coast, a bit of sun in the Caribbean or a four-week transatlantic challenge.
“I have achieved something that lots of people would have thought impossible. I’m proud to have sailed with such fantastic, life-loving people" - Jenny Charles.
