The Windsor Fellowship at Westminister

The Windsor Fellowship was recognised by the some of the leading luminaries of the political establishment recently after 77 MP’s pledged their support to an Early Day Motion put forward by Labour MP <font style="color: #000000">for Brent South, </font>Dawn Butler, congratulating the organisation on its 20th anniversary.

earlydaymotionEarly day motion is a phrase used in Westminister for motions tabled by Members of Parliament for debate "on an early day" in the parliamentary cycle. They are not usually debated openly on the floor of the Chamber of the House. Instead EDMs remain open for signature for the full duration of the parliamentary session. Each signature is an affirmation of agreement with the content proposed in the EDM.

The substantial and broad coalition of individuals brought together in their support for this statement includes personalities as varied as controversial RESPECT MP (and former Celebrity Big Brother Housemate) George Galloway and the Novelist Anne Widdecombe, also an MP for the Conservative party alongside other notable figures including former Home Secretary David Blunkett, Dianne Abbott and Sadiq Khan.

Dawn Butler grew up helping in her parents’ business, a small West Indian and European bakery they set up upon arriving in Britain from Jamaica in the 1950’s. From her humble beginnings she has forged a remarkable political career, the best of which is arguably still before her. She was Chair of London Black Women’s Council and worked as an adviser to the General Secretary of the GMB union and the mayor of London on employment and social justice issues. Only the third Black woman in history to be elected to the House, Dawn displays a commitment to equality and achievement for all in the UK that she shares with the Windsor Fellowship.
