Undergraduate opportunities at Swansea University
Students choose to study this degree for various reasons. We talked to Erin McDonald, 23 of Llanelli, who is a third year student on the course.
<font size="2">Choosing Medical Sciences and Humanities…
I always had a keen interest in medicine, however, due to my situation at the time of applying I knew that I could not get onto a medicine course, and to be honest, I did not feel I was ready for it either. I knew that this course was for me. After attending an open day, I realised I really loved the university as well - it has a fantastic location and is really friendly - so I had my heart set on the course.
The course…
The first year provides a really broad base, covering everything from the sciences through to subjects like history and literatures, with law, economics, social sciences and philosophy along the way. The second year and third year still keep a broad base, building your skills in the areas, but become increasingly focused; this enables you to focus your areas of interest more clearly, particularly in the third year with the dissertation.
Why study this course?
The course is so broad that it really gives you a chance to explore what you may be interested in for the future, whether that may lie in a healthcare field or not. It is unique and challenging, but good fun and set in a brilliant environment.
The staff are generally superb; they have time for you, are friendly, and will do all they can to help you when you need it. I have always felt that I can approach them when I have needed to.
The future…
I have recently applied to several graduate medicine courses, including the one at Swansea, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that. I would love to stay in the area, as I have felt increasingly settled here, so to an extent we shall see!
