share your sport…

Volunteering doesn’t have to be a chore. In fact, the best sort of volunteering involves sharing something that you really enjoy with other people. And if the thing you enjoy most in the world is sport, you’re in luck.

marcus_fagonCoaching sports overseas is fast becoming one of the most popular of all gap year pursuits. With an organisation like GAP SPORTS, you could find yourself coaching football in Ghana, cricket in Costa Rica, tennis in India or hockey in South Africa.

Share your skills with kids in deprived communities, or work with national youth teams at the top of their game, while acting as a mentor and friend for your players.

Like a lot of volunteering, this is a win-win situation. You get to spend a few months playing your favourite sport in the sun, while contributing to another culture and building bridges with far-flung communities through the international language of sport.

“I taught basketball in two schools in Ghana. I worked with a wide range of kids, from four-year-olds up to talented teenagers. I had a great time, living in a house with a bunch of other volunteers. But I got so much more out of the experience – I taught the kids about basketball, but they taught me about life” – Marcus Fagon
