students raise over £50,000 for earthquake victims
The Federation of Student Islamic Societies (FOSIS) is proud to announce that over £50,000 has been raised by students partaking in sponsored fasts across the country during last term.
The One Day National Fast, which coincides with the month of Ramadan, involved students at over 65 campuses across the UK. Non-Muslim students fasted alongside their Muslim counterparts, going without food and water from sunrise to sunset.
Participants came from a wide array of backgrounds, and included Union executive and University lecturers and officials.
Participants gained an insight into the experience of billions of Muslims worldwide, whilst also appreciating the plight of the hungry across the world, most notably those who have been affected by the recent earthquake in South Asia.
Wakkas Khan, FOSIS President, said today: “I am extremely proud of the amount of money that has been raised. It is very heartening to see students from a diverse range of backgrounds unite together to help those less fortunate than ourselves.
“With the onset of the harsh Kashmiri winter, we hope that this money will provide some welcome relief to the victims.”
Maadh al-Hadithi, President of the participating University of Manchester Islamic Society, said “The interest in the one-day project has been overwhelming. The spirit of the participants was amazing. There were so many interested people who genuinely wanted to understand and share in this experience. It was incredible to see people choosing to go without food and water, to help those in the world who don't have a choice.”
All proceeds raised will be sent to the victims of the South Asian Earthquake, via the charity Human Appeal International, a national partner in the relief effort.
